Rhodes, Greece

Writer's picture: MattMatt

A UNESCO world heritage site, Rhodes is one of the bigger Greek islands located just off the coast of Türkiye. The old town is a beautiful medieval city with cobbled roads and castle walls. The main attraction is the Castle of the Grandmaster of the Knights of Rhodes.

With views of the Mediterranean Sea, the views from Rhodes doesn't disappoint. When in Rodos, just past the beautiful blue water, you'll have a nice view of the Turkish coast. If you look back towards mainland Rhodes, you'll see the walled in city of old town Rhodes which is also a spectacle to see. Even just sitting at a cafe or restaurant in town, you'll have nice little views of cobbled streets if in old town. The newer side of town is more open and not walled in but still keeps that small street vibe.

Food: 4.5/5

It's part of Greece. The food is always going to be amazing! With the use of local ingredients you can taste the freshness and the care they put into their food. We ate at sandwich place for lunch and it put subway to shame. With a home made sandwich with all local ingredients and tzatziki sauce you just can't beat that. I had a meat and cheese pastry style meal that was cooked in a brick oven and was amazing. Both meals were paired with a freddo cappuccino and that was great too!

For dinner I had moussaka and it was perfect. While not a fan of eggplant, I had to try it when in Greece and just having everything so fresh makes it a whole lot better.

Wine: 3/5

While I forgot to take a picture of our wine, greek wine is always great. While not very common to get recommended at a restaurant in the states, it is worth a try. Rhodes' common variety is Mavrothiriko. Most Greek wines we tried do have a distinct flavor to them but we do recommend you give them all a try. You might find one you like.

City Safeness/ Upkeep: 5/5

We never felt unsafe in Rhodes. Since we were there in the offseason there weren't too many tourists so we basically had the city to ourselves. Even with the island to ourselves we never felt like we had to watch ourselves on top of just general safety. While parts can look run down, overall it has a nice new vs old town vibe which was lovely.

Overall: 4.5/5 Off-Season Travels Approved

With a 4.5/5 Rhodes, Greece is an Off-Season Travels approved destination! It's easy to get lost in the beautiful little streets and shops and stop for a great meal or snack. The views are beautiful and is any photographer's dream! Make sure this place is on your itinerary when visiting Greece!
